Origin Story
Dal makhani comes from Punjab, where whole black lentils are simmered slowly with tomato and spices until they turn soft and deeply savoury. The name means “buttery lentils”, and butter and cream are what give the dish its velvet finish.
The best-known restaurant version is usually credited to Moti Mahal in Delhi, the same kitchen famous for butter chicken. From there it travelled to Indian tables and menus all over the world.
At Indian Curry Club, our dal makhani is black lentils with the flavour of Indian spices, finished with cream and butter. It sits on our vegetarian curry menu and goes well with butter naan or a plate of rice.
